Rydal: a small village with a railway heritage
A village of the old road
Rydal was first settled in the 1820s on the road to Bathurst, and it was busy from the mid-1800s until the highway bypassed it in 1929. It lies a few kilometres off the Great Western Highway at about 950 metres elevation. The railway station and rail underbridges are listed on the State Heritage Register.
A small community
Only a few hundred people live in the wider locality, and the village itself is smaller still. Shops and fuel are in Wallerawang, so building supplies and trades are not on the doorstep, and planning ahead for site access helps.
Rural and village rules
The Lithgow Development Control Plan 2021 (DCP, council’s detailed design rules) sets limits by zone and lot size. Village lots follow the urban limits and larger rural lots follow the rural section. Heritage, bush fire and drinking water catchment mapping all need a look before you start.

What owners build here
Rydal’s small size and heritage setting shape the work. Typical jobs we certify include:
- Alterations and verandah rebuilds on older village homes.
- New houses on village and rural lots.
- Sheds, garages and carports.
- Rear additions that suit the existing building.
- Granny flats, within the local plan’s size limit.
How approval usually works
Check the heritage map first, since work next to a listed item can need a heritage assessment, and the railway items are state listed. Then check bush fire mapping, because much of the area is bushland and the construction level or an asset protection zone can shape the design. Confirm your zone and lot area so you know which part of the DCP applies. A complying development certificate (CDC, the fast-track route under state rules) is only possible where heritage and hazard mapping allow it, and larger or heritage-affected jobs usually need a development application. CertifiBuild looks at all of this first.

Local questions
Questions we hear about this suburb.
No two lots in Rydal are the same. Give us your address and we will check every map that affects it.
See the council pageIs my Rydal house heritage listed?
Only if it is on the heritage map. The railway station and rail underbridges are state listed, and other items or conservation areas may be mapped in the local plan. Check the current mapping for your lot and the items next to it before designing an addition.
Do bush fire rules apply in Rydal?
They may, since much of the area is bushland. Check the council’s bush fire map for your lot. If it is mapped, the building must meet the assessed construction level and may need an asset protection zone, which takes up part of the site.
Can I build a shed on my Rydal block?
Usually, within the limits for your zone and lot size. Larger rural lots follow the rural section with higher limits, while village lots follow the urban limits. Measure the block and confirm the zone before you order a kit.
